Makoko is a floating light installation that YRD.Works developed for the Offenbach harbour basin on the occasion of Luminale 2014. In content and aesthetics, the light objects referred to the Makoko Floating School, a floating school built in 2013 by the office NLÉ, led by architect Kunlé Adeyemi, for the Makoko community in Lagos, Nigeria. YRD.Works transferred its A-frame architecture to five islands of translucent-covered timber frames that floated on buoyancy bodies in the water. Besides building on water, what interested the collective in the model was the symbolic function of architecture and the fluid transition from usable building to sculpture.

The light objects responded to wind and weather through their movements and their spatial arrangement. Anchoring them to the bottom of the harbour basin prevented the formation from dispersing completely. The light of the islands followed a programmed sequence, controlled from land via a DMX controller. The audience followed the installation from the shore.
